Genesis
The supplement Religious Values arose by initiative
from presbyter Guillermo Marcó, Press Director
from the office of the archbishopric of Buenos Aires. Marcó
was inspire by the supplement Alpha and Omega, that weekly
appears with the ABC newspaper, of Spain, product of an agreement
between the archbishopric of Madrid and the newspaper. In
Argentina, Marcó presented the idea to Clarín
(http://www.clarin.com)
- the hispanic newspaper with the biggest circulation in the
world - that immediately accepted the proposal.
Who we are
Like in Spain, to canalize the proposal a civil association
without profit aims was constitued – “Trabajar
para la Caridad” (Work for Charity) compound by a group
of lays and headed by Luis Crego (Administration degree).
They agreed that the editor responsable would be the journalist
Sergio Rubin, prize Santa Clara de Asís, for
more than one decade has been in charge of the religious subjects
in Clarín. Father Marcó is the editorial consult
and an habitual columnist.
The proposal
The supplement shows religious matters, the facts and opinions
of the vast field of the Catholic church and the other confessions,
spiritual problematics of our time with a pleasant style and
ecumenical and interreligious spirit. The idea is call the
atention to the readers in religious topics that have different
ways of manifestations in life of a society. We look forward
for the promotion of the religious values, its incarnation
in the daily life and a culture that seems adverse to a trascendent
glance.
To who is wanted to arrive
The objective is to reach the greater amount of readers,
practicing or not. And even to that, without having a religious
faith, they can be interested in this issues. Talking about
a massive and heterogenous newspapper like Clarín,
is clear that we target not only to the public who habitually
is interested in the religious subjects. Or only to one single
religious community. Although - respecting the proportion
of believers in Argentina - it contains information and notes
in his majority catholic.
How it finances
The supplement does not persecute profit aims. But it requires
of resources for his support. The main form of financing is
the publicity. Although donations are received. Between the
advertisers, great companies that publish institutional or
commercial ads, schools and universities, governmental organisms,
enterprises and sindical organizations are counted, as well
as companies that serve direct or indirectly to the religious
world.
Our advertisers
Between the advertisers we can count on with the medical
assistant ANDAR from the Association of Selling Travelers
(www.redsocialfuba.org.ar);
the Argentine Catholic University (www.uca.edu.ar)
and Salvador University (www.salvador.edu.ar)
; companies like Daimler Chrysler, Repsol-YPF, Aerolíneas
Argentinas and Zurich Insurance; the BBVA Banco Francés
and Banco Ciudad de Buenos Aires, religious editorials such
as Claretiana and Santa María; Nuestra Señora
de las Nieves and Champagnat school; even the presidential
support and the AFIP (Public Income Federal Administrator),
and the first religious thematic park of the world “Tierra
Santa” (www.tierrasanta-bsas.com.ar).
Results
The supplement, that began to appear sporadically in July
2002, was very well received. Subjects like the progress in
the dialogue jude-christian, the controversy about the film
“The Passion”, from Mel Gibson, the advances of
the historical studies about Jesus life or the answers to
the questions that “Da Vinci’s code” raised,
succed with great interest. “Religious Values”
constitute a landmark in the Argentine media, since it is
the first religious supplement of a newspaper of national
distance. In 2004, it received the prize Santa Clara de Asís.
We want to collect opinions and proposals all over the world.
